I don’t need you, but you’re kinda hot…

In case you haven’t heard… serious sale going on over at shopbop right now! I’m having trouble staying away, but trying to remember that just because things are on sale doesn’t mean I need them… With that in mind, I’m trying to stick to wardrobe basics (meaning more black, apparently). Thankfully my size is gone in a ton of things already or else I might have a problem…

Alive + Olivia Slim Dress with Embellished Hem (Was $440, Now $308)
Until my closet(s) are literally overflowing, I’m going to be a believer in never having too many little black dresses. I’ve had my eye on this one for a few months and the flirty detailing on the hem is unlike anything else in my closet… Almost sold.

Robert Rodriguez Leather Combo Leggings (Was $297, Now $208)
I know, I know it’s more than I should (and usually do) spend on leggings, but they’re part buttery leather and I’ll wear them way more than other things I’ve spent more money on. (Not that that’s necessarily a good thing… ooops). Just try and talk me out of them.

Thakoon Cardigan Jacket (Was $1,250, Now $375)
Ok, I’m sorry but would ya look at that discount!?!? And Thakoon is just adorable and so is this suit. It’s timeless and versatile and can you tell I’m trying to convince myself that it deserves a place in my closet… My wallet says no but I’m not really in the mood to listen.

All in favor of blatant designer knockoffs? The jury’s still out on this one, but in short, I think it depends… While I don’t particularly have a problem with companies like Steve Madden making affordable look-alike versions of designer shoes, I’m guilty of passing a little judgment when I spot a fake Fendi on the street (or Burberry basketball???). But this isn’t a post about debating the moral implications of designer replicas, I promise. It’s really a more round-a-bout intro to my “investment of the day” idea. I spend (too) much time looking at pretty things online and inevitably falling in love with them, but don’t have nearly a big enough shopping budget to buy everything I want (woe to the man who marries me :) ). Thus I am a master at finding looks for less and it’s about time I share some of them with you! Since my 9-5er is all about wealth management and guiding clients to invest in products that are appropriate for them, it’s fitting that I categorize my investments into those suited for the following:
Institutional Investors – As defined by investopedia, “A non-bank person or organization that trades securities in large enough share quantities or dollar amounts that they qualify for preferential treatment and lower commissions.” In other words, ya got the money to buy the goods (and qualify for free shipping too).
Retail Investors – Also known as an individual/small investor, they’re described as “investors [who] buy in much smaller quantities than larger institutional investors.” As in, I could give up eating this month and buy these Loubs, but that would be dumb. Really dumb.
With that said, I posted this dress back in September but recently spotted a lovely lookalike…
Institutional Investor: Marc by Marc Jacobs Organza Dress ($345 at Yoox)

Retail Investor: Take Me to Dinner Dress ($90 at ModCloth)
And in case I haven’t exhausted the fact that I’m obsessed with Gemma Redux necklaces like this one (I am), but I can’t exactly afford them all…

I’m so over this nasty weather and looking forward to Sunday when it’s supposed to be back in the 60′s and sunny again! In the meantime, I’m doing some research to try to convince Z that maybe we should have joint pet custody of a bunny… they’re small and soft and you don’t have to walk them – not to mention, how adorable is this??? (pleaseeee!?) Have a Wonderfelle weekend everyone!

I’d like to take a moment to argue that since the bond market was closed today, the stock market should have been as well… It would have been the perfect (read: cold and rainy) day to stay in bed and watch hours of On Demand, but instead I grumbled the four blocks to work in the gross, gross weather. Clearly all of DC didn’t get my memo on proper rain attire, because there certainly wasn’t a lack of ugly rain boots on the street.
Speaking of rain boots, apparently you can get them to match your wallpaper these days – that is if you were to get these Vivienne Westwood wellies…
Squiggle Wellington Boots ($110)
Vivienne Westwood for Cole & Son Squiggle Wallpaper ($varies)
Eh. I don’t particularly want worm-like squiggles on my shoes or my walls. There are some designer collaboration concepts that make sense… and then there are those that leave me wondering… what were they thinking???

In case you missed my excited tweet earlier, I’m clearly not too embarrassed to admit I entered a drawing to win free tix to see an advanced screening of New Moon… and WON! I’m just hoping the movie fast forwards through the 200 pages or so of the book where Bella is depressed and boring…

On another note, I’m having a hard time not falling in love with every single sparkly concoction Alexander Wang can cook up this year. The asymmetric sequined number Kristen is wearing in this shoot for Harper’s Bazaar needs more attention I think…
Alexander Wang Drape Sequin Dress ($815)
Hellllooo holiday party dress! I’d be all over this one… but what’s this about spending my money on presents for other people?

W Washington, DC
Apparently its a week full of fill-in-the-black inspired shopping for me… photography, origami, art… and today, hotels. I think I love hotels more than I love traveling (don’t get me wrong, I love visiting other places, it’s the whole getting there process that I’m not a huge fan of). Thanks to A Cup of Jo, I could (do) spend hours on mrandmrssmith.com, a boutique and luxury hotel specialty site. It’s amazing – I promise it will make you want to go on vacation ASAP.
This summer I happened to be at one of the W Hotels in New York (49th and Lexington) and was pleasantly surprised at how great the hotel store was. So great, in fact, that I could have spent all my money there and forgone the rest of the shopping trip (except for my buddy J’s awesome store Prima Donna, of course)… but I didn’t. Anyway, I was pretty excited to find out that you can shop at the W Hotel Store online! It’s a great source for chic gifts and I’m a big fan of their Global Glam section – a number of small collections of items inspired by various W Hotels… here are some highlights:
Glitter Glam inspired by W South Beach
Chain and Crystal Woven Cuff by Rachel Leigh ($152)
Jewel Box inspired by W Istanbul
Beaded and Embroidered Clutch by Deepa Gurnani ($288)
Neon Garden inspired by W Santiago
Flower Cluster Necklace by Lenora Dame ($184)
Butterfly House inspired by W Hong Kong
Nature Cuff by Nashelle ($196)
White Waves inspired by W New York
T-Back Dress by Alisha Levine ($250)

I have a new found obsession with Olivia Rubin‘s S/S ’10 lookbook shot by Alistair Guy. The model Alys looks insanely cool – like she inspired the fashion which inspired the art and then she threw on an cocktail dress, Ray-Bans, and Dior Addict Lipcolor in Rose Starlet to go see it on display in a studio loft downtown.

What do you get when you catch a a shooting star and put it in a cage and wear it on your finger? Astley Clark’s Vault Rings (£145), of course.

Designed by Kity Hefang Sun, the 2009 Bright Young Gem and winner of Astley Clarke’s Gold Award, the rings are inspired from the geometric shapes formed by the ancient art of origami.

Part structural, part whimsical and completely delightful :)

One day last week when I was sick, I randomly woke up from this feverish, intense dreaming nap and felt like painting. Z had been wanting me to paint something for his office, and I ended up painting an abstract acrylic work on canvas panel that turned out pretty well. We went to Utrecht to get it framed and ended up getting more canvas – I guess I’m kinda on another painting kick at the moment… Anyway, I spent some time stumbling for some inspiration online and came across Iain Crawford‘s photography. How amazing are these color splash photos?? I want giant prints of his beauty shots to cover the walls in my hallway. As a response to my all black previous post, I felt compelled to share some shopping finds with color for a change…

Cloak & Dagger Suzette Dress in Red Marine ($203)
I have a serious lack of red in my closet – well, except for the multiple pairs of red shoes that do not make it on my feet nearly enough. I think this dress would be an excellent work-to-night number or a lovely office holiday party option with some sparkly jewelry, don’t you think?

Rock & Republic Celina Suede Platform Pumps ($275)
Put on my blue suede shoes…. oh wait, I don’t have any. And that’s why I need these! They have the perfect little platform and whatever that spike/dagger like charm is gives them more character than shoes that just say, “hey, I’m blue.”

G-Shock Baby G Yellow Watch ($90)
Z and I spotted a number of yummy candy colored watches at Redeem a couple months ago and then debated getting him when they were on a Gilt sale… but alas, my wrist is still bare. I’m digging this bright yellow one, kinda a throwback to the first chunky timex watch I ever had… but much cooler.
